Spotlight Athlete of the Month | ARI BARBIN
Ari joined CFE at the tail end of last summer after having been powerlifting partners with her husband Jon at their garage gym. CrossFit-curious for some time, Ari came in for her first workout and there was no looking back. She even pulled Jon away from his steel plates and swapped them for bumpers just a few months later.
Among her many great qualities, our favorite part about Ari is that she tackles all challenges head-on with unwavering positivity. There’s never a barrier that dissuades her from trying nor is she ever down on herself. When Ari encounters a hard to overcome movement/workout/challenge (as we all do) she will without hesitation will say “well now I know what I need to work on!”
Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself, Ari. And congrats on being this March’s Spotlight Athlete of the Month!
What do you do outside of CrossFit?
I work as a Business Partner for a startup in the solar industry, and prior to that I was in Talent Acquisition. I love the people-first aspect of my job and being a source of help and support for them.
Outside of work I like finding a chance to see our friends, whether it’s Game Night or going out for drinks! My husband and I took up paintballing together too. Great relationship building exercise.
What did you do for fitness before CFE?
I played Soccer and ran Track in high school. After I graduated fitness really took a backseat for a few years. I came across a random bodybuilding 12 week program that I thought I’d try it. It helped me
develop a better mindset around fitness overall, but I would get bored pretty easy. I’d try a program, complete it and then think, ok now what?
What made you chose CFE?
I’ve been a CrossFit spectator for a few years now, watching the games and thinking “that looks so fun”! So, I finally thought I’d stop watching and give it a try. I won’t lie, I was on the struggle bus my first class, but thought to myself “I can only go up from here.” And I was pretty much hooked after my first week. I love that no workout is the same, but the programming has a very clear purpose. I can’t believe what my body has been able to do over the last few months- my endurance is SO much better than day 1, and I feel stronger than I ever have.
Advice to someone who is hesitant to try Crossfit?
Take a chance on it! I really wish I had done it sooner. The workouts are challenging, but the feeling of accomplishment afterwards is awesome and gets me excited to be there the next day. And there’s NOOOO shame in scaling!
In the gym: benching 135 because there was a point in my life when I genuinely struggled with a single knee push-up.
I get in my own head a lot. Classic over-thinker and try to talk myself out of things if I’m nervous. I do this whenever we have a Snatch workout…those make me nervous lol
Goals moving forward in life, at the gym?
At the Gym I have my sights set on a 315 deadlift. I feel like I’m close and it would be a lifetime gym goal finally achieved!
If you could design a workout what would it be?
It would have to have rowing, a deadlift, and then something I suck at like TTB lol gotta practice!
If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?
Meatball and ricotta pizza!
No rain, no flowers.
Forrest Gump OR Devil Wears Prada…please don’t make me choose!
You’re stuck in a Karaoke Bar and can’t leave till you sing a song, what song is it?
Mr Brightside by The Killers
What’s a fun fact about you that we should know about you?
I’m a huge cat person, and we have 3 at home. I’ll always be down to binge watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Office is my favorite show and I’ll use lines from it regularly. My favorite color is pink…I gave you more than 1, sorry!
