April Athlete of the Month – Nikki Bernier

By: 0

Nikki is badass. She’s been CrossFitting for some time and we’ve been lucky to be able to work with her since late last fall. While her time at CFE has been a matter of months that hasn’t kept her from always impressing the coaches and her fellow athletes with focused dedication and continual improvement.

Nikki puts a serious amount of work into all things fitness. Her nutrition is always dialed in and her training is consistent with 100% effort. It’s that approach to health and fitness which has helped her to scratch goal after goal off her to-do list so she can set her sights on the next achievement. Congrats and thanks for sharing, Nikki!

Profession: I’m a police officer in Danville, NH.

Athletic Background: Prior to CrossFit, I was a cheerleader in high school, if you count that as fitness. I really started in my fitness journey doing home workouts to the Beachbody Insanity program. I later progressed to bodybuilding and eventually more powerlifting type workouts.

What is CrossFit to you? To me crossfit is not only a place to get fit, but it’s a safe place to go and decompress after a stressful day, or start the day off right. With always having to be a decisive and in control it’s nice to let someone else dictate what you do and just follow along.
Why CFE? Before CFE I went to another CF gym. CFE to me is far superior than any other gym I’ve been to. The community makes it so fun! I’m super introverted, but it’s so hard to be quiet and shy when everyone is so friendly and amazing! And the coaches are so attentive, always offering tips to tweak and adjust regardless of how experienced you are.

What inspires/motivates you to continue? I’m motivated to by all the progress I see in myself and others. And if you’re feeling a little low on motivation there’s always someone around willing to push you.

Advice for someone hesitant to try CrossFit: My advice would be to disregard the negative opinions of others and go into it with an open mind. There’s no shortage of people sipping the haterade, and there’s a lot of misinformation from that. Try it, and do your best knowing your body and your limitations. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first time picking up a weight or you’ve been a high level athlete for years.

Proudest Achievement: My proudest achievement has been pull-ups. I’ve always struggled with them, but within a month Tobey had me ditching the bands and hammering out pull-ups.

Greatest challenge/weakness: I still struggle with double unders, and stringing toes to bar.

Goals inside and outside of the gym: Goals inside the gym include chest to bar pull-ups, double unders, stringing toes to bar, and someday muscle ups. Outside the gym is to just keep living the best I can and enjoy myself more.

Favorite Movements/if you could design one workout: My favorite movement is squats. Any variation, overhead, front, back, goblet, bring on the squats. A workout including squats, box jumps, wall balls and push jerks would be fun!

Special Interests: I love reading, mainly super nerdy books, kayaking, hiking, hanging out with my nephews, and shopping!
